The best alternatives to Day One

Day One might not be the right fit: the price, a missing feature or a payment model you don't like. These are the closest alternatives in our catalog, ordered by rating, with the full review of each one.

Why look for a Day One alternative

Day One joins the catalogue as a 15-year-old journal (Bloom Built, bought by Automattic in 2021) that added Daily Chat in April 2026, an optional AI layer that asks follow-up questions, summarises entries and suggests titles. The user base backs the product strongly (118,000 App Store ratings at 4.8 out of 5, Apple recognitions like App of the Year), but the AI layer is new, ships only on the Gold plan ($74.99 a year, with no monthly price published) and at launch only worked on iPhone and iPad. An independent, medically reviewed review confirms it offers no mood tracking or clinical guidance, which fits the segment's question but also marks the limit of what it does.

What its own users repeat in the August 18, 2026 sweep:

  • Daily Chat and the rest of the AI features are Gold-only, the priciest plan ($74.99/year), and there is no monthly price published to try it outside the free trial (strong theme)
  • At launch, in April 2026, Daily Chat only worked on iPhone and iPad, according to 9to5Mac's coverage (strong theme)
  • An independent, medically reviewed review confirms it offers no mood tracking or clinical guidance, so it does not substitute for an app built for structured wellbeing support (present theme)
  • Daily Chat is a very recent feature (April 8, 2026), without a long track record to prove its reliability against the rest of the product (present theme)

What the internet says about each alternative

Rosebud 3.6/5 · Free + from $8.99

Rosebud is an AI journal that cross-references every new entry against a user's full history and returns follow-up questions plus a weekly report, backed by a very high and sustained App Store rating (4.7 out of 5 across more than 35,000 reviews) and a $6 million round closed in June 2025. The company states in writing, in its own help centre, that it does not replace therapy or diagnose anything, which fits a segment built around avoiding medical advice. The entry price is $8.99 a month billed annually, with a permanent free tier that covers basic journaling. Two user-documented issues are worth watching: a complaint about being charged after cancelling the free trial with no refund, and unreliable voice transcription.

Where it wins: Long-term memory across entries: connects behavioural patterns over weeks instead of treating each conversation as isolated Where it slips: A documented complaint from a user charged for the annual membership after cancelling the free trial, with no refund afterwards

Mindsera 3.4/5 · Free + from $14.99

First sweep of Mindsera. The Estonian app has been alive since December 2022 and got direct coverage from The New Yorker in July 2023, confirming first-hand its in-house system of AI-generated follow-up questions as you write. It remains active (latest version just days old) with 253 App Store ratings (4.8/5) and 251 Google Play reviews (4.4/5), but has no verifiable presence on Reddit or Trustpilot, and its Capterra listing has no reviews yet. Its entry price, $14.99 a month, is confirmed literally and identically by two independent checks against the official App Store listing, which also shows two different annual figures ($129 and $99) with no clear label for which is the list price.

Where it wins: Generates real-time follow-up questions from what you write, confirmed first-hand by an independent New Yorker feature ("Mindsera generates questions based on what you've written") Where it slips: Its own App Store listing shows two annual prices at once, "Genius Annual" $129 and "Genius Annual Offer" $99, without making clear which one you'll actually see at checkout
