Our verdict

Our verdict · By Serchai

Ello listens, adapts support and provides family reports, but its current offer officially targets ages 4 to 9. It should not appear in a recommendation for a ten-year-old. Ello 2.0 remains in early access.

Best for: Families with children aged 4 to 9 learning reading and maths through adaptive activities.

What the internet says

Ello looks the same as a week ago. Read with Ello, the app actually sold under this brand today, keeps its price of 14.99 dollars a month or 139 a year, reconfirmed today by two independent checks on its App Store listing. That price corrects the tool listing's field, which had carried an unadjusted 'from $0' since launch and never reflected what is actually charged. The official site still sells Ello 2.0 as free with an unpriced paid upgrade, on a waitlist for late 2026, even though the Ello 2.0 App Store listing remains downloadable, free and ad-free, and got an update two days ago with generic release notes that change nothing substantive. The privacy policy, last updated on August 14, still keeps the same 30-day retention of children's audio (up to 5 years if flagged) and the same declared COPPA compliance.

What the web repeats in favour

  • Reading tutor designed for young ages that listens and adapts help in the moment

What the web repeats against

  • The home product processes children's audio and interactions, with audio retained on the server for 30 days for safety reasons, and requires reviewing consent and parental controls
  • The site promotes Ello 2.0 as free with an unpriced paid upgrade, while Read with Ello still charges 14.99 dollars a month under the same brand
  • Family reviews describe weak parental controls: a child can log out easily and there is no lock or PIN to get back in

Pros / Cons

Pros

  • Designed for early ages
  • Listens to real reading
  • Family account and progress

Cons

  • Only for ages 4 to 9
  • 2.0 offer remains in early access
  • Optional premium price is not public

What it solves and what it does not

Ello listens, adapts support and provides family reports, but its current offer officially targets ages 4 to 9. It should not appear in a recommendation for a ten-year-old. Ello 2.0 remains in early access.

Best for: Families with children aged 4 to 9 learning reading and maths through adaptive activities.

The real reading test

  1. Choose a text at the child’s level and let them get stuck without intervening.
  2. Observe how long the app waits, how it corrects and whether it distinguishes an error from a normal pause.
  3. Review family reporting and measure progress over two weeks, not first-day excitement.
