Why look for a Ello alternative

Ello looks the same as a week ago. Read with Ello, the app actually sold under this brand today, keeps its price of 14.99 dollars a month or 139 a year, reconfirmed today by two independent checks on its App Store listing. That price corrects the tool listing's field, which had carried an unadjusted 'from $0' since launch and never reflected what is actually charged. The official site still sells Ello 2.0 as free with an unpriced paid upgrade, on a waitlist for late 2026, even though the Ello 2.0 App Store listing remains downloadable, free and ad-free, and got an update two days ago with generic release notes that change nothing substantive. The privacy policy, last updated on August 14, still keeps the same 30-day retention of children's audio (up to 5 years if flagged) and the same declared COPPA compliance.

What its own users repeat in the August 23, 2026 sweep:

  • The home product processes children's audio and interactions, with audio retained on the server for 30 days for safety reasons, and requires reviewing consent and parental controls (strong theme)
  • The site promotes Ello 2.0 as free with an unpriced paid upgrade, while Read with Ello still charges 14.99 dollars a month under the same brand (strong theme)
  • Family reviews describe weak parental controls: a child can log out easily and there is no lock or PIN to get back in (present theme)

What the internet says about each alternative

Google Read Along 4.3/5 · Free

Google Read Along remains free, ad-free and does not require sign-up: the app asks for no name, age, email or phone number to get started, and voice is processed on-device only without being stored. The store listing was updated on August 12, 2026, a sign the project is still maintained even though Google has a history of discontinuing education apps. No new dated fact appeared this week that would change the Classroom integration, free since June 2026, with cross-assignment tracking still gated behind Education Plus, or the lack of a native iOS app.

Where it wins: It is free, corrects while a child reads and on Android does not store or send the recording Where it slips: Family tracking is basic and there is no native iOS app

Readability 4.2/5 · Free trial · from $19.99

Readability still listens to primary-age children reading aloud and corrects them on the spot, with a family dashboard covering progress, accuracy, fluency and comprehension, for 19.99 dollars a month with a 30-day free trial, confirmed today on the app page and on the App Store listing (4.6 out of 23,000 ratings). The main domain again required passing an anti-bot challenge, so for a fourth week running the privacy policy could not be reread there. The policy that is reachable today, dated January 3, 2020, requires a parent account to create the child's account but still does not explicitly mention training the AI with voice recordings. The BBB profile shows an A rating with only two complaints on file, none dated this week. With no new facts, all five axes stay where they were.

Where it wins: Real-time reading feedback and a family dashboard covering progress, accuracy, fluency and comprehension Where it slips: The policy allows voice recordings, including children's recordings with parental consent, to train and improve the AI

Readigo 4/5 · From $9.99

Readigo remains focused on children aged 6 to 12 reading English aloud and turning each session into family metrics. This week there is no new dated fact: the monthly plan is still 9.99 dollars and the annual plan 59.99, both covering up to three profiles, still matching literally between the official site and the App Store as last week. The privacy policy and terms remain dated May 28, 2026 with no changes, and the App Store listing stays at 3.0 out of 5 based on just 2 ratings, with no new visible reviews or family-forum discussion found.

Where it wins: Immediate correction and tracking for accuracy, fluency, pace and clarity for ages 6 to 12 Where it slips: It is iOS-only, and voice is encrypted and sent to ElevenLabs for transcription before the resulting text reaches OpenAI for analysis
