Why look for a Intercom alternative

Intercom is the platform that has pushed the AI support agent furthest: Fin resolves whole conversations, runs procedures and works across chat, email, phone and social, backed by in-house models post-trained on someone else's foundation models. The 1,134 verified reviews on Capterra give it 4.5, with ease of use at 4.4 and value for money at 4.0, and price is exactly where people complain most. On top come two verified corporate facts: the company became Fin in May 2026 and Salesforce agreed to buy it in June for around $3.6 billion.

What its own users repeat in the August 4, 2026 sweep:

  • Price is the dominant complaint: across 211 reviews that mention cost, most describe it as expensive and hard to forecast, because it mixes seats with usage (strong theme)
  • The billable outcome definition is broad: it counts if the customer confirms, if they stop writing after the reply and also when the conversation ends up passed to a person (strong theme)
  • The company renamed itself Fin in May 2026 and in June signed its sale to Salesforce, so anyone signing today signs with a company being absorbed (strong theme)
  • The list price is not even stable within the same page: an active experiment shows part of the visits an offer with the figure struck through (present theme)
  • During major outages users describe being unable to reach anyone, and technical glitches are the second most repeated negative theme (present theme)

Best alternatives to Intercom

What the internet says about each alternative

Crisp 3.8/5 · Free + from $45

Crisp is made by CRISP IM SAS in Nantes, with no investors, and its argument is price: a flat rate per workspace instead of per agent, with unlimited human conversations from the free plan onwards. The AI agent is included from the Mini plan at 45 a month, but with a monthly credit allowance that on running out stops answering and escalates everything to people. The flat rate is not infinite either: four seats and five thousand contacts on that plan. And there is a currency muddle that confuses even the trade press, because the page declares dollars to machines and paints the euro symbol according to the visitor's timezone.

Where it wins: You pay per workspace rather than per person, so adding colleagues does not change the bill while they fit within the plan's cap Where it slips: The flat rate carries caps that do not show up when comparing prices: four seats and five thousand contacts on the entry plan, with additional agents billed separately on the higher plans

Help Scout 3.7/5 · Free + from $25

Help Scout has been selling the same thing with conviction since 2011: a shared inbox the customer receives as an ordinary email, with a knowledge base and a chat widget. Its AI agent, AI Answers, resolves chat sessions at $0.75 each, and that is where the limit almost nobody mentions sits, because it works only inside the widget and never touches email. Capterra scores it 4.6 across some 226 reviews with ease of use at 4.7, and the steady complaint is reporting. The $25 the page shows is the annual price: paid monthly it is $30.

Where it wins: The conversation reaches the customer as an email from a person, with no ticket number or automated signature, and it is what has held its reputation for over a decade Where it slips: The AI agent lives only in the website and mobile chat widget: support emails are resolved by nobody but your team
