Why look for a Tabnine alternative

Nothing operational has moved since the Tricentis purchase: the same two plans at $39 and $59 per user a month, the same extension marked Legacy on both VS Code and JetBrains, the same 30 July statement unchanged since 3 August. The only new thing this week is context around the deal itself: Israeli outlet Calcalist puts the purchase in the tens of millions of dollars, with no official terms disclosed, and notes Tabnine had raised $55 million from investors including Khosla Ventures and Atlassian Ventures. There is no Hacker News thread about the acquisition, explicitly confirmed today, and no sign of layoffs or product changes tied to the merger either.

What its own users repeat in the August 10, 2026 sweep:

  • There is no free plan and no trial: both published plans carry the same request-a-quote button (strong theme)
  • The VS Code and JetBrains add-ons are marked legacy, and the JetBrains one warns it does not onboard new users (strong theme)
  • Closing the cheap plans left dated one-star reviews, including one from somebody who had paid for a year days earlier (strong theme)
  • The privacy promise covers its own models, not the third-party ones the same chat lets you pick (present theme)
  • It changed owner on 30 July 2026 in a deal Calcalist puts in the tens of millions of dollars with no official terms disclosed, and the buyer states the technology will be folded into its own platform (present theme)

What the internet says about each alternative

GitHub Copilot 3.9/5 · Free + from $10

Base prices have not moved: Free at $0, Pro at $10, Pro+ at $39 and Max at $100. What this sweep corrects from the previous one matters: sign-ups for the individual plans, paused since 1 June, reopened gradually from 17 June, and today the pricing page shows no waitlist at all. What has not improved is the pace of model cuts, on 31 July GitHub retired Gemini 2.5 Pro and Gemini 3 Flash effective immediately and announced further removals, including both Opus models, for 1 September. And the underlying complaint is the same one from June, AI credits run out before month end.

Where it wins: It lives where you already work: your usual IDEs, pull request review and agent tasks inside GitHub Where it slips: AI credits run out well before month end under heavy use, and it is the most repeated complaint since June 2026, with new August threads from users burning through half their quota in two days

Gemini Code Assist 3/5 · Free trial · from $19

This remains the most contradictory file of the batch. The official pricing page repeats today, literally and identically, the same four figures from the previous sweep: Standard monthly $22.80, Standard annual $19, Enterprise monthly $54, Enterprise annual $45. The 18 June 2026 shutdown for consumer accounts remains the fact explaining the collapsed rating on the VS Code and JetBrains marketplaces, and no new relevant thread has appeared on Hacker News, Reddit or the trade press since the previous sweep. It shipped a new extension version on 8 August 2026, but the official changelog does not detail what changed, so it does not count as a verifiable product fact.

Where it wins: Installs into the editor the team already uses, with almost five million installs on VS Code and two million downloads on JetBrains Where it slips: The independent rating remains damning, with no sign of recovery this week: 1.93 out of 5 across 841 ratings on VS Code, with one star the most-voted bucket on JetBrains
