As of August 5, 2026, xAI's default voice alias on its API automatically routes to the new Think Fast 2.0 model, cutting time-to-first-audio from 1.25 to 0.70 seconds and raising its Artificial Analysis speech-to-speech score from 75.7% to 82.9%. xAI's Grok Build uploaded entire repositories with API keys and passwords before the company disabled it
A security researcher showed that the Grok Build CLI was uploading entire Git repositories, commit history included, to a Google Cloud bucket, even files the model never read. A test .env file went out unredacted, API_KEY and DB_PASSWORD values included. xAI disabled the upload on July 13 but hasn't said how many users were affected or published a formal report. Anyone granting this tool access to private repos should know a real leak happened and the company hasn't been transparent about its scope. Source

What Grok is
Grok is xAI’s general-purpose assistant, available at grok.com and through iOS and Android apps. Although it began inside X, the account, history, settings and subscription now sync across the product’s surfaces.
Its defining feature remains combined access to the web and X. For news, public conversation and events that just happened, it has a source other assistants do not integrate in the same way. That does not make a post reliable evidence: Grok can find and cite it, but the user must still distinguish a primary source from a viral comment.
The other half of the product is Grok Imagine. It generates and edits images, and also creates short video clips. The current video system can produce visuals, effects, music and speech within one result. This is an app feature rather than merely an xAI API capability, so Grok can legitimately enter a visual-tool recommendation.
What it is like to use
The experience resembles a complete modern assistant: chat, reasoning modes, voice, files and connectors for mail, documents and calendars. For someone moving between current events, PDF analysis and a visual asset, that breadth avoids switching services.
Imagine is better at creating and testing clips than finishing a production. A short generative video still needs selection, editing, rights checks, captions and channel adaptation. If the job is editing an interview, dubbing a course or turning a podcast into clips, a specialist solves it better.
Images follow the same pattern. Grok is strong at creating and requesting changes conversationally. Brand identity, editable SVG, batch production and strict consistency are better served by products with dedicated controls.

Free costs nothing and lets you try chat, search, voice and some creative capabilities within limits. SuperGrok costs $30 a month and raises access to frontier models and Imagine. Higher levels and team or enterprise plans also exist.
Since 2026, paid products share one weekly allowance. Chat, Imagine, Voice and Build draw from the same pool, though not at the same rate. A short message costs little. A high-quality video or long coding task costs much more. At the limit you can wait for reset, buy extra usage or move plans.
The system is clearer than a collection of separate caps because it shows the percentage consumed. It also means there is no honest conversion into a fixed number of videos: that depends on quality and feature mix.
What happens to your conversations
xAI states that it may use your prompts, searches, files and Grok responses to train its models. You can stop this under Settings, Data, “Improve the Model,” or use Private Chat. New conversations stop entering training after the setting is disabled. Feedback you submit voluntarily may still be used even after you opt out of training on ordinary chats.
“Free” therefore does not automatically mean “private.” The practical step for an ordinary user is simple: switch that control off before asking questions and do not paste sensitive data. Business accounts have different terms.
Who it is for
Grok fits journalists, creators, analysts and heavy X users who need current information and want images or clips without leaving their assistant. It also fits anyone valuing voice, files and connectors inside one product.
Paying $30 makes little sense for writing and summarisation alone. Claude is often a better purchase for long documents. Gemini fits Google Workspace. ChatGPT offers a more established general-purpose ecosystem for less.
The trade-off to accept
Breadth is paid for twice: in price and in the shared allowance. Video generation can consume a disproportionate part of the weekly pool and leave less room for chat or code. Test the exact mix you expect before subscribing.
X search also demands editorial judgment. Access to a real-time conversation does not mean that conversation is true. Important decisions require opening the sources and finding independent confirmation.
