Our verdict

Our verdict · By Serchai

Speak is the option most centred on speaking: it cuts theory and makes you produce speech from the first session. Language availability depends on the language you learn from, and its best rate requires annual billing.

Best for: Adults who understand the theory but freeze when speaking.

What the internet says

Speak is unchanged this week: its four prices ($17.99 and $83.99 for monthly and annual Premium, $39.99 and $164.99 for Premium Plus) and refund policy stay the same, reconfirmed on the App Store. The official home page still publishes no figures and always points to the app. Recent reviews repeat the known complaint that it only covers seven source languages, with some users asking for more options (Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Tagalog). A one-off unauthorised-charge case on Trustpilot has only two total reviews on that platform, an insufficient sample to treat as a pattern, so it is discarded as a new theme.

What the web repeats in favour

  • Back-and-forth conversation with immediate feedback and lessons built from the learner's mistakes

What the web repeats against

  • Personalised lessons and broad tutor access are concentrated in paid plans
  • The refund policy only gives a full refund within seven days of a purchase made on Google Play or the web, there is no refund after thirty days, and a purchase made through the App Store has to be claimed directly with Apple
  • It only covers seven source languages, and several reviews ask for it to expand to Arabic, Chinese, Farsi or Tagalog
  • After each roleplay conversation, the error summary is brief and does not discuss grammar or pronunciation patterns, with no cumulative tracking of recurring mistakes

The ten-minute speaking test

  1. Stay in the same real situation for ten minutes without returning to multiple choice.
  2. Make one deliberate pronunciation and one grammar error; separate useful correction from constant interruption.
  3. Repeat the scene a week later and check whether it remembers recurring mistakes or merely entertains.
